“We considered it important that in this square, in the environment named after Aznavour, there should be a statue that would symbolize his constant presence in our city,” said Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan during the unveiling ceremony of the Charles Aznavour statue.
“Today, in Charles Aznavour Square, we are unveiling a statue that symbolizes not only the memory of the great artist, but also the contribution of the Armenian people to international cultures. Charles Aznavour, born in Paris to a family of Armenian refugees, is one of the most famous names in world music. More than 1,000 songs, films, and names in more than 90 countries. He was the man who was recognized here without translation or explanations, and he continues to be the man who is recognized, and his art is recognized, without additional explanations. During the 20th century, Aznavour was considered one of the most significant cultural figures in France, a man who embodied the values, culture, and memory of the survivors of the Genocide, as well as the human language of art. We considered it important that in this square, in the environment named after Aznavour, there should be a statue that would symbolize his constant presence in our city. Aznavour is important for our people, our country, he will never stop being by Armenia’s side, regardless of times and beliefs,” Tigran Avinyan said in particular.
The installation of the statue was initiated and fully financed by the Yerevan Municipality. Mayor Tigran Avinyan emphasized that this is exceptional, as the Municipality does not typically implement such initiatives.
