China's state-run CCTV reported details of the phone call between Presidents Xi and Putin.
Putin briefed Xi on recent contacts between Russia and the United States and said Russia is ready to maintain close ties with China.
Xi said China welcomes continued contacts between Russia and the United States, supports the improvement of U.S.-Russia relations, and encourages progress towards a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.
The Chinese president also said that complex issues do not have simple solutions. He added that China will continue to promote negotiations to resolve regional conflicts.
