Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted a new draft law on anti-corruption bodies to the Verkhovna Rada. He promised that the document would ensure the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP). Both bodies have said that the bill will restore guarantees of their independence.
Zelensky said that the text of the new bill is balanced.
"I have agreed on the text of the bill, which guarantees a real strengthening of the rule of law in Ukraine, the independence of anti-corruption bodies, as well as reliable protection of the rule of law from any influence or interference from Russia," the Ukrainian president wrote on Telegram.
A few hours later, the bill was indeed submitted to the Rada.
The speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, promised that the bill would be considered "significantly ahead of the registration deadline," despite deputies being on vacation until the end of August.
