German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has agreed with US accusations that Europe is doing too little to finance its defence and security, but he believes they share the same view.
“We know we have to do more on our own, and in the past, we were free drivers. They ask us to do more, and we do more,” he said.
Merz said he has a weekly phone call with Trump and is coordinating efforts with him. The first issue is the war in Ukraine, and the second is our trade disputes and tariffs.
“We see a big threat, and the threat is Russia. And this threat is not just to Ukraine. It is to our peace, freedom, and political order of Europe,” he stressed.
