White House to End War Crimes Investigation Programs. Reuters

The White House has recommended cutting funding for nearly two dozen programs designed to investigate and prosecute war crimes around the world, Reuters reported, citing sources.

The proposal, submitted by the US Office of Management and Budget, has not yet resulted in a final decision to end the programs, as the State Department may appeal it.

However, the proposal could cause tension between the Office of Management and Budget and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his aides, who are expected to present their proposals to clarify which programs are worth continuing, the news outlet reported.

The programs include work to investigate and document war crimes in Iraq, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Belarus, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and the Gambia.

The US State Department declined to comment, and the Office of Management and Budget did not respond to requests for comment.
