Images from several satellites have shown that major cities and towns on the US East Coast are sinking. Levon Azizyan, director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring, wrote about this on his Facebook page.
“Land subsidence, or ‘slump,’ as these satellites see it, is dangerous because it can erode the foundations of buildings, which can lead to collapse. It can also damage roads, as well as gas and water pipes.
Along with rising sea levels caused by anthropogenic climate change, coastal subsidence can increase the risk of flooding and worsen further damage,” he wrote.
