Iran's parliament has voted to close the Strait of Hormuz. The National Security Council will make the final decision, however.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea passage between Iran and Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf with the open waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.
It is a major artery for global oil and gas trade, processing 20% of global oil exports and 30% of liquefied natural gas. An estimated 17-21 million barrels of oil pass through the strait daily, most destined for China, India, Japan, and South Korea.
