IAEA warns of damage to nuclear facility in Iran

The IAEA said Thursday that Israeli strikes damaged key structures at Iran’s heavy water reactor in the city of Irak.

“Although initial damage to the Khondab heavy water production plant was not visible, the agency later assessed that key structures at the facility, including distillation equipment, were damaged,” the IAEA said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the bombing of the facility violated the UN Charter. He called on the UN Security Council to hold Israel accountable for the attack on the nuclear facility.

Israel said on Thursday it had struck the “inactive” Arak nuclear facility in an attempt to prevent its possible use for developing atomic weapons.

Since the facility’s reactor was not operational and contained no nuclear material, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on Thursday that “no radioactive fallout is expected.”
