The US sent about 700 Marines to Los Angeles

The US government has approved the deployment of about 700 Marines to Los Angeles, in addition to the National Guard forces already deployed. The deployment comes amid clashes with immigration officers.

In addition, 2,000 more National Guardsmen are being sent to the city. California authorities have called the deployment illegal and filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.

In a statement to AFP, a senior White House official said the Marines' deployment was due to "escalating threats to federal employees and facilities."

According to a statement from the military command, the Marines will "seamlessly integrate" with the forces already deployed, which "protect federal personnel and property in the Los Angeles metropolitan area."
