The United Kingdom and the European Union have taken their first step towards each other in five years since Brexit. After months of negotiations, they have agreed to remove some border barriers and signed an agreement on a partnership in security and defense.
“Today we are closing a page and opening a new chapter in our unique relationship,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “This is a historic moment. And this is a success.”
Starmer called the agreements significant, adding that they benefited both sides. “Britain is back on the world stage. In the last two weeks, we have concluded trade deals with India and the United States,” he said.
