Iran is proposing to create a consortium to enrich uranium with American investment.
This could be an alternative to the "complete elimination" of Iran's nuclear program, which is being promoted by Donald Trump, four Iranian officials told the New York Times.
According to the NYT, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed the idea to US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, during talks in Oman on Sunday, May 11. Witkoff's representative denied that the topic was raised during the meeting.
It is assumed that in addition to Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE should participate in the consortium. Under the agreement, Iran will be able to enrich uranium to 3.67%, after which it will be sent to other Arab countries for civilian needs.
The idea of enriching uranium below the level needed for nuclear weapons is already included in Iran's 2015 nuclear agreement with other countries. The main difference in the new proposal is that it provides for the presence of observers from different countries, including the United States, at Iranian facilities.
