US and UK reach agreement on tariffs

The UK and the US have agreed on a trade deal that will remove some of Donald Trump’s tariffs on cars, aluminum, and steel. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the agreement would save thousands of British jobs.

Speaking to workers at the Jaguar Land Rover plant in Solihull, Starmer said it was a “fantastic and historic day.” He said the deal had saved jobs in the car and steel industries that were at risk.

The US has agreed to remove 25% tariffs on British steel and aluminum, giving the steel industry a vital boost.

The tariff on British cars under 100,000 will be reduced from 27.5% to 10%. The US is a significant export market for British cars, worth more than £9 billion last year.

The deal also includes “preferential treatment” for the British pharmaceutical industry.
