New India-Pakistan tensions under the influence of superpowers

The recent military tensions between India and Pakistan reflect a global strategic power realignment as the United States and China deepen their engagement with various actors in South Asia, respectively.

Historically neutral, India has moved significantly closer to the United States and its allies in recent years, dramatically reducing its reliance on Russian arms. According to the latest data, arms imports from Russia have fallen by more than 50% since 2010. Today, India receives a significant amount of its arms from the United States, France, and Israel.

On the other hand, Pakistan has become a key strategic partner of China. Currently, about 80 percent of Pakistan’s arms are supplied by China. The country mainly relies on Chinese military technology, including the J-10C fighter jet and long-range missile systems.

India’s armed forces are being intensively modernized with platforms from Western suppliers, while Pakistan continues to deepen its military ties with China.

These interconnected developments in South Asia demonstrate how regional conflicts are expanding in the context of global great power competition.
