Trump calculates that Russia will not withstand sanctions. Political Scientist

Radar Armenia's interlocutor is Hmayak Hovhannisyan, President of the Union of Political Scientists, former MP.

- US President Donald Trump has announced that he is reducing the 50-day deadline previously given to Russia to reach an agreement with Ukraine. What does Trump's statement indicate - any danger?

- Of course, there is a danger; the thing is, in fact, today Russia finds itself in a rather complex, centered situation. It is making progress on the military front, albeit very slowly, and the fact that Russia intends to complete its plans is apparent. Still, it is also clear that the United States, represented by President Trump, considering the mood in Congress and the upcoming elections, will naturally have to fulfill its promise. Trump is already being accused of not following through on his promises.

- In his statement to Trump, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Medvedev noted that Russia is not Israel or even Iran. What message is he conveying? Can we say that Russia is not inclined to sign a peace agreement within the next 10 days?

- Russia is indeed not Iran, Israel, or Syria. Russia remains Russia, and there is no question about that; no additional clarifications are needed here. Russia has already realized that it cannot afford to lose time (ed.: we are talking about Russia not being inclined to sign a peace agreement in 10 days), and it is already clear that it is refusing. Russia hopes that China will ensure the supply of military equipment, as all other channels for receiving equipment will be closed.

- What steps can Trump take if Russia does not take these steps in 10 days?

- The steps are straightforward; he has already said what steps he will take, in plain text, that is, secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian oil, and here Azerbaijan will find itself in a difficult situation. This will be a blow to Azerbaijan, as it is the main transit route for Russian energy resources, as well as to other countries where Russia provides the primary income, with oil and gas exports being the main source of income. Trump calculates that Russia will not be able to withstand this and will be forced to retreat from its current position.
