An explosion inside a star has been seen for the first time

Scientists have made a remarkable discovery: they have, for the first time, observed the interior of a star as it explodes.

Stars can survive for millions or even trillions of years before running out of fuel. The most massive stars end in an explosion called a supernova, during which it is usually impossible to see the interior.

The discovery confirms that large stars are built in layers, with lighter elements on the outside and heavier ones closer to the core.
